Fluid Handoff
A continuity model where tasks move between phone, tablet, and ambient surfaces without users re-explaining intent.
Core challenge
Most "cross-device" systems are state-sync systems. Users still pay interpretation cost each handoff. Fluid Handoff reduces that cognitive restart.
System behavior
The system records the active object, unresolved question, current confidence, and surface suitability. The receiving device opens in a state that matches the next decision, not just the last viewport.
UI evidence
Design decision
Handoff is modeled as a governed transition. The sending surface must explain why it is handing off, and the receiving surface must expose what changed.
Tradeoff
The model adds explicit state labels, which can feel heavier than a pure sync feature. That cost is acceptable because it prevents users from silently losing task intent.
Outcome
It proves that handoff quality is not only technical sync; it is interpretation continuity.
